For another historical novel about settling the West, try Racing Home by Saskatchewan author Adele Dueck (Coteau Books, 186 pages, $9 paperback). Based on a Norwegian family who settled in Outlook, Sask. (called Green Valley in the book), it paints a different picture of early immigrant life: sod houses, cross-country skis, early lumber enterprises.
Dueck combines these items with the story of a 12-year-old boy who finds he has a brother in Canada, a brother who won't speak to his father. Only with the help of a horse race does the family problem get resolved.
Dueck has written three other books for young people, including Nettie's Journey and Anywhere But Here.
