Sport – It’s More Than A Game…

Sport builds healthy, active communities and enables individuals to gain life skills, such as leadership, teamwork and goal setting, which helps them to succeed both in and outside of sport. But, how did Saskatchewan’s sports system transition from outdoor shinny with cow patty “hockey pucks” to the world-class amateur athletic system that exists today with modern hockey and curling rinks, soccer facilities, football stadiums and baseball diamonds?

The history of Sask Sport Inc., and its continued success, lies with its dedicated, community-oriented volunteers who had the foresight to establish a provincial sport organization tasked with fundraising. In 1974 Sask Sport established Saskatchewan Lotteries as a fundraiser for sport, culture and recreation. Saskatchewan is only place in the world where a volunteer sports organization runs a state lottery. Together with Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association and SaskCulture, volunteers continue to use lottery proceeds to fund more than 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups, providing programs and services to over 600,000 registered members in the province.

This book traces the history of the amateur sport system in Saskatchewan, exploring how early sport leaders secured the lottery as a fundraiser and how they’ve been able to maintain control of the lottery over the years. It is a story about innovation and what happens when ordinary citizens have the opportunity to develop policy and create programs that respond to needs in their communities.
